"Tin't Help Falling in Love" is a song recorded past American vocalist Elvis Presley for the album Blue Hawaii (1961). Information technology was written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss and published by Gladys Music, Inc.[two] The melody is based on "Plaisir d'amour",[4] a popular French dearest vocal composed in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini. The song was initially written from the perspective of a woman equally "Can't Help Falling in Love with Him", which explains the first and tertiary line ending on "in" and "sin" rather than words rhyming with "y'all".[5]

"Can't Help Falling in Love" was featured in Presley'south 1961 picture Blueish Hawaii. During the following v decades, it has been recorded by numerous other artists, including Bob Dylan on his 1973 anthology Dylan, Dick Smothers,[6] Swedish pop group A-Teens, and the British reggae group UB40, whose 1993 version topped the U.S. and UK charts. It has besides been regarded as one of the greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone, ranking #403 in the list's 2012 edition.[seven]

Background and release [edit]

Elvis Presley'south version of the song topped the British charts in 1962, spending four weeks at no. 1. The single is certified Platinum past the RIAA, for U.s.a. sales in excess of 1 1000000 copies. In the The states, the vocal peaked at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 backside Joey Dee and the Starliters' "Peppermint Twist"[8] and went to No. ane on the Adult Contemporary chart for half-dozen weeks.[9] [10]

During Presley's late 1960s and 1970s live performances, the song was performed as the show's finale. Most notably, it was also sung in the live segment of his 1968 NBC goggle box special, and every bit the closer for his 1973 Global telecast, Aloha from Hawaii. A version with a faster organization was the closing number in Presley's concluding Tv set special, Elvis in Concert. "Can't Aid Falling in Dear" was also the last vocal he performed live, at his concert in Indianapolis at Market Square Loonshit on 26 June 1977.[11]

The recording appeared on the 1997 CD re-issue Elvis' Gilded Records Volume 3 as a bonus track and on the 2002 career retrospective collection ELV1S: 30 No. 1 Hits.

In 2015, the song was included on the If I Can Dream album, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Presley's birth. The version uses archival voice recordings of Presley and his singers, backed past new orchestral arrangements performed by the Royal Combo Orchestra.

The song is used as an anthem by several English language football clubs since the 1960s, including Huddersfield Town, Hull Urban center, Swindon Town and Sunderland.[12]

According to a 2020 survey past OnBuy, the vocal is the most pop option for couples equally the song for the outset dance at their wedding.[thirteen]

In 1993, British reggae band UB40 covered the original 1961 Elvis Presley recording equally the beginning unmarried from their 1993 album, Promises and Lies. The song was released on May 10, 1993, and somewhen climbed to No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, staying there for 7 weeks. It also topped the charts of xi other countries, including Australia, Austria, holland, New Zealand (where it was the almost successful single of 1993), and the United Kingdom where it topped the nautical chart for ii weeks.

The song appears on the soundtrack of the motion picture Sliver,[30] the trailer for Fools Rush In, and an episode of Hindsight. In the U.s., and on the Sliver soundtrack, the vocal championship was listed equally "Can't Help Falling in Love," rather than what appeared on the record sleeve, which included parentheses around the words "I Can't Help". The unmarried version of the vocal also has a slightly different backing rhythm and melody.

The song and band besides appear in the 1997 film Speed 2: Cruise Control.

Critical reception [edit]

In his review, Rovi Staff from AllMusic noted that "carried by the hitting "Can't Help Falling in Dear", Promises and Lies finishes UB40's transition from a reggae ring to an adult-contemporary band that plays reggae-pop."[31] Some other editor, David Jeffries said the song is "representing the ultra-slick, piece of cake to consume side of the band".[32] Larry Pic from Billboard wrote, "U.Thousand. dancehall stars indulge in Elvis Presley memories on this commencement single from the soundtrack to Sharon Stone's new movie, "Sliver"." He added that it "has a pillowy, midtempo pace that dabbles in isle beats and radio-witting funk. Flippant horns are a jolting, though ultimately pleasing, element in the system. A fun respite from usual height xl fare."[33]

Marisa Fox from Entertainment Weekly said the vocal is "this album's equivalent" of their earlier version of Neil Diamond's "Red Ruby-red Vino", noting that the band "revitalize" it. She also noted that "they try some snappy new product tricks", like the "full-blown orchestrations" on the vocal, adding that "those kinds of enhancements merely make the blend that much more infectious."[34] James Masterton wrote in his weekly UK chart commentary, that "this was a hit most before it had even been released."[35] Pan-European magazine Music & Media viewed it equally a "reggae remake that sounds like the sun volition never stop shining."[36] Alan Jones from Music Week described it every bit a "predictable ramble through the Elvis Presley/Andy Williams/Stylistics perennial".[37] A reviewer from People Mag called information technology a "Rasta-Lite" version.[38]

The vocal was the A-Teens's first unmarried from their 3rd studio anthology, Pop 'til Yous Driblet!, besides as for the Lilo & Sew together movie soundtrack, which was originally scheduled to include several Presley tracks, the A-Teens picking information technology for inclusion in the soundtrack. It was later also featured equally a bonus rail on their 3rd studio album, New Arrival for the European marketplace. The video had thus tremendous exposure on several television channels, with the A-Teens eventually including the song in their third album. Music video [edit]

The video was directed by Gregory Nighttime and filmed in Los Angeles, California. Information technology had 2 different versions. The "Disney Version", as the fans named it, features scenes of the pic, and also new scenes of the A-Teens with beach costumes. The "A-Teens Version" of the video, features the A-Teens on the white background with different close-ups and choreography, and scenes with puppies and different costumes.

  • The uptempo version by Andy Williams peaked at No. iii in the UK Singles Chart in March 1970.
  • The Al Martino recording was released by Capitol Records and charted in 1970, peaking at No. 51 on the Billboard charts and No. 57 on the Cashbox chart.
  • Bruce Springsteen has performed the vocal many times live.[91] The most notable was the performance in Due east Berlin in 1988.[92]
  • The Stylistics went to No. 4 in the United kingdom with a disco version in 1976.
  • Engelbert Humperdinck recorded the song in 1979 on his This Moment in Fourth dimension LP. The unmarried became an Adult Contemporary hit, reaching No. 44 in the U.S. and #11 in Canada.
  • Slim Whitman recorded the vocal in 1981 and was included in his anthology "Mr. Songman". This version peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard country charts, and was his last chart entry in his career.
  • Lick the Tins first released their version on a unmarried in 1985 and included it on their 1986 anthology Blind Man on a Flying Equus caballus. It peaked at no. 42 and spent nine weeks on the UK Singles Chart that year.[93] It was also used in the movie Some Kind of Wonderful.
  • In 1987, Corey Hart'south recording reached No. 1 in Canada and No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • Folksingers Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger performed a version at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in 1993 that was recorded on video;[94] information technology demonstrates Guthrie's story-telling fashion of performing, and simultaneously underlines the importance of this song.
  • In 1997, Spiritualized's original pressing of Ladies and Gentlemen Nosotros Are Floating in Space had a version of the championship track that incorporated the lyrics and tune of "Tin't Aid Falling in Love".[95] The Presley estate initially objected to this, and a remixed version appeared on the commercial release, with new lyrics. However, Spiritualized continue to utilize both sets of lyrics in live performances. Past 2009, they were allowed to use the version with the Presley lyrics on the reissued edition of the album, with the proviso that the song exist titled "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (I Can't Aid Falling in Love)."
  • Taiwanese boyband F4 recreated the song "Can't Help Falling In Honey" in 2002 for the movie Lilo & Run up.
  • Russell Watson reached No. 69 in the Uk in a 2006 recording from his LP The Ultimate Collection.[96]
  • Ingrid Michaelson released an updated version on her album Be OK in 2008, which was nominated for the American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Stone Single, and Contained Music Honor for Best Song – Cover.[ citation needed ]
  • Haley Reinhart's 2015 remake of the vocal peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Developed Contemporary nautical chart and No. 31 on the Billboard Adult Pop Airplay nautical chart.[97] Information technology was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Clan of America on October 4, 2019.
  • Filipino actor and Singer, Daniel Padilla sang the song "Tin't Help Falling In Love" for the 2017 Filipino romantic comedy-drama film Can't Assistance Falling in Love.
  • In 2018, Iliana Eve's remake was a single from the album Jazz (Deluxe) that hit No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz Charts. She was 15 years one-time when she recorded the song with Benny Reid.[98]
  • A rendition sung by Kina Grannis appears in the 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians and the accompanying soundtrack.[99]
